The American dream can easily become an American nightmare if you find yourself held hostage to house payments when you need the money for other things.
If you didn't own, you'd have to pay rent money - but you could downgrade to a smaller/cheaper rental if necessary, or you could live with a friend or relative without losing your shirt.
It's not that easy with a house that you "own". (If you're still making mortgage payments, you don't own it; your lender does.) You don't dare miss a payment for fear of losing your home. If you lose your home, you've not only lost a place to live, you've lost all the money - principle and interest - that you've paid to date. You have nothing left for a downpayment on another home. You're just "out of luck".
So if you lose your rented home, what do you lose? Well, you've already lost the money you paid to rent; however, you should recover any deposits you made as long as you haven't caused any damage and you've left it clean.
One advantage to owning your home is that you can plan it so that you don't have house payments when you retire, thus freeing up retirement income for other things. You can also sell your home and have at least the principle you've put into it, in a lump sum. If it's not over $250,000 for a single or $500,000 for a couple, you don't even pay tax on it
